How to convert SBV to SRT

  1. Paste your SBV subtitles into the SBV source box, or choose a .sbv file (UTF-8, up to 5 MiB) — conversion runs automatically.
  2. Leave a blank line between subtitle cues. Use Load sample for an example of the required layout.
  3. Edit the source any time to re-convert, or press Convert to retry on demand.
  4. Review the SRT result — cues are numbered sequentially, and any warnings appear with the output.
  5. Download the .srt file, or copy the text straight out of the result box.

What changes between SBV and SRT

SBV (SubViewer, .sbv — a format long associated with YouTube caption uploads) writes each cue as one timing line, 0:00:01.000,0:00:03.000, followed by the caption text; there are no cue numbers and the separator between start and end is a comma. SRT numbers every cue and writes 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000 with a --> arrow and comma decimals. This converter adds the cue numbers and rewrites the timestamps; cue times and caption text are preserved.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SBV file?

SBV is the SubViewer subtitle format, best known as a caption format accepted by YouTube. Each cue is a start, end timing line with dot-millisecond timestamps followed by the caption text.

Do my timings change?

No. The same start and end times are kept; only the notation changes to SRT's numbered-cue, comma-decimal form.

Are my subtitles uploaded anywhere?

No. Parsing and conversion run entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server, stored, or logged.

What files can I load?

A UTF-8 text file up to 5 MiB. You can also paste subtitle text directly into the source box instead of choosing a file.
